Google Maps is going beyond mere navigation service in Chandigarh too, as now the app on mobile and computers offers real-time traffic analysis of all roads in the city. Plus, the app would also support Hindi speech now and has integrated cab services.
Product manager, Google Maps India, Sanket Gupta was in the city on Thursday to announce the launch here of the updated version of Maps.
How it works
To use the traffic monitor, you have to go ‘settings’ in the app, and turn on ‘traffic layers’. After that, it will start colour-coding the roads — green for no delay, orange for medium volume of traffic, and red would mean heavy congestion — and accordingly tell you more precisely how long it would take to reach from one point to another.
Gupta said, “This feature is available for all national highways and expressways in India, and in 34 cities, including Chandigarh now.”
Also, you can now get the turn-by-turn, voice-guided navigation in Maps in Hindi and Indian-accent English on mobile. For this, you just need to update the app and, in the app settings, enable Hindi as preferred language in the language menu on your phone.
Cab service too
If you are looking for a cab service in the city, you can now pick between Uber or Ola cab services via Google Maps too. You have to have the taxi provider’s app installed, though, to be able to see fare estimates and pick-up times. Commuters will also be able to share views about venues with reviews, and share a ‘place’ with others from within the Maps app through email, SMS, Google Hangouts or Whatsapp.
