The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) has started an online foundation course on education of children with disabilities (FCED).

The programme enables in-service teachers to imbibe knowledge, understanding, attitudes, skills and other required competencies to deal with and impart education to children with various disabilities.

The centre will conduct the course 10 times in a year, with duration of three months (90 days) for each session, including 12 days of skill training programme (STP).

The programme will be conducted through skill training centres, which are RCI recognised institutions of the region.

A spokesperson for the RCI said, "All in-service teachers working at any level, any special educator or an individual who wants to understand disability issues are eligible to take admission in the course. After the completion of login hours, 100% attendance and submission of practical records as per the framework, the teacher will be eligible to appear in the term-end theory examination."

He added that the programme would also facilitate special educators to learn more about the disabilities and earn 50 points under continuation rehabilitation education programme (CREP) while any other teacher from general school, who have done diploma/degree in special education, will get a weightage of 10 marks at the time of admission to BEd special education programme.

"At present, the programme is being offered in English and will soon be offered in Hindi as well as in other regional languages," he added.

The application forms for admission are available on website www.rehabcouncil.nic.in throughout the year. The fee for the programme is Rs 2,000 payable at the time of registration, including examination fee.

Earlier, RCI had started the programme through distance mode by three open universities - Indira Gandhi Open National Open University (IGNOU), Madhya Pradesh Bhoj Open University (MPBOU) and North Easter Hill University (NEHU).
