Giving the pass-out students an opportunity to improve their marks, Punjab Technical University (PTU) has decided to conduct their improvement exams with the final examinations held by the university.

Though the decision has brought cheer among students who aspire to improve marks, it has also caused disappointment among them as the university is charging a whopping fee of `5,000 a subject for this.

According to the university officials, a student can apply for division improvement in as many as 10 subjects.

Ashok Mehra, a PTU student, said, “It’s an appreciable initiative by the university as students will get a chance to improve their marks, but how many of them will be willing to apply considering the high fee. Also, if a student wants to improve marks in two subjects, he/she will have to shell out `10,000.”

The director of a PTU affiliated college said, “The university is charging `700 for re-evaluation but `5,000 for those who want to improve their score, which is unfair. Moreover, when the university is not conducting a separate exam, as they will appear with the regular students in their respective colleges, why the university is charging `5,000?”

According to the university officials, if a student fails to improve the division, he/she will not get the benefit of the marks scored in the division improvement exam.

For this, students will have to attest the examination forms from their respective college and send it to the university. The last date for sending the improvement form is April 18.

Students can send the form with a late fee of `1,000 a subject till April 25, `2,000 a subject till April 30 and `5,000 a subject with the permission of the vice-chancellor in special circumstance till May 2.

Jaspal Singh, PTU controller of examination, said, “With this new initiative, we are giving students a chance to improve their marks and are expecting over 150 students from Punjab to take the division improvement exam.”
