Scheduled to be hanged on March 31 for his involvement in Beant Singh's assassination, Babbar Khalsa militant Balwant Singh Rajoana on Thursday accepted the title of 'zinda shaheed' (living martyr) announced for him by the Akal Takht.
In a latest letter to the media sent through his sister Kamaljeet Kaur from the Patiala Central Jail on Tuesday, Rajoana said, "I respect the rejection of my appeal to take back the title given to me by the Akal Takht."
He said he had wanted the Akal Takht to take the title "due to some principles of the Sikh religion". "Now, this title will make me more responsible and dedicated towards my commitment for the cause of the Sikh religion. I accept this title with folded hands," said Rajoana.
The Babbar Khalsa commented on the Sikh religion being "in the clutches of Western civilization". "Boys with ear piercings and girls wearing jeans is not a part of Sikh religion," he said.
