The slum dwellers here will now be able to get new residential power connections without even submitting any important documents, including registry of their house, as per a circular issued by the central government recently. This was stated by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) central zone engineer-in-chief NK Sharma in a statement issued here recently.
The slum dwellers, which will now be able to get new electricity connections (20KW) by just producing an identity proof, have extended their thanks to the PSPCL and the state government.
Power supply connections are one of the major problems among the slum dwellers in the city areas, including Dhandari Kalan, Giaspura and Pakhowal Road.
Sharma said, “We will provide new connections to the dwellers living in slum areas for the past several years. If the PSPCL will provide new connections to them on the government land, then the government will have the power to get the land vacated, whenever there is a need to do so and the connection will then be taken back. If shanties are situated at places where there is no availability of power connection then the government will not prove the connection to them.”
He added, “The residents can now apply for new connection by visiting the nearby PSPCL office and show the officials their identity cards. The residents have to fill up a form, which is available at the PSPCL office, for applying for the new connection.”
Meanwhile, slum dweller Vipan Kumar of Dhandhari said, “This is an appreciable initiative taken by the government as now every household will get power supply. The government should come up with more such schemes.”He added that the government should also organise awareness camps at slum areas so that they could benefits from the same.
