Following the intervention of the Canadian government, an NRI woman was united with her year-old son here on Thursday. Her in-laws were reluctant to give custody of the child to her.

NRI Jaspreet Kaur Mann, a Canadian citizen, had married Jatinder Pal Singh of Lajpat Nagar here in April 2013 after they became friends on Facebook. Jaspreet stayed at her in-laws for about eight months before leaving for Canada in December 2013. There she gave birth to a boy in July 2014 and came to India in September 2014.

In December 2014, her husband died in a mishap. Under depression, the woman returned to Canada leaving her six-month-old son with her in-laws. In April this year, she came back to take her son back.

Division No 5 SHO Beant Juneja said her father-in-law Balwinder Singh and mother-in-law Surinder Kaur got attached to the boy and were reluctant to hand over the child to her.

She contacted the Canadian government on whose intervention the Ludhiana police swung into action. On Thursday, the police counselled her in-laws following which they agreed to hand over the child to her.
