Even as the UK has rejected the body as that of NRI hotelier Ranjit Singh Power (54) on the basis of a DNA report, the court on Tuesday framed murder charges against accused Sukhdev Singh.
Sukhdev of Manakpur village is in jail, and Baldev Singh, who is in the UK, has been declared a proclaimed offender. Baldev originally was a native of Shekhewal village. This has come as a big relief to the police in the face of DNA report from England negating police’s claim that they had recovered Power’s body, after the sample of victim’s mother did not match with that of the body.
Inspector Navdeep Singh, who is carrying out the investigation, argued in the court that despite the negative DNA report, they have sufficient evidence against the accused to prove the murder charges against them.
The police have submitted a statement of Narinder Singh, a taxi driver hired by Power when he landed in Amritsar Airport and travelled in his vehicle with Baldev. Police have also procured immigration records of Power, besides air tickets to and from India booked by the victim. They have records from the ‘serai’ of Golden Temple where Power and Baldev had stayed. There is also a CCTV camera footage showing Power and the Baldev.
The investigating officer said Deol had already been declared a proclaimed offender and efforts were on to extradite him from the UK. On May 6, the court had dismissed Sukhdev’s bail application. The police are in the process of filing a supplementary chargesheet against the accused .
