The body of Sachin Rana (34), who was murdered in his grocery store in the US city of Ohio on October 5, reached Ludhiana on Sunday, after which the family cremated him.
A pall of gloom descended on the area as the body arrived at Madhopuri here. Rana's sister, Sonia, who is settled in California, brought his body to their ancestral house. Sudesh Kumari, victim's mother, was inconsolable, and the relatives tried in vain to comfort her.
Rana's father, Chiranji Lal, along with Congress leader Sanjay Sharma, had gone to Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi to bring home the body of his son. Chiranji Lal said the airport authorities had harassed him for five hours. The flight landed around Saturday midnight but he got the coffin around 5am on Sunday.
Rana was shot by a shoplifter. His parents said the killer had not been identified yet. Rana had been in Ohio for five years. He leaves behind a son and a daughter. After he separated from his wife, he had sent his daughter to his parents in Ludhiana, while his son is in Ohio with his mother.
The family said Rana had come under racist attacks over the past few months and had reported the matter to the police.
