Hundreds of train passengers travelling on the Ferozepur division were stranded on Tuesday, as members of Northern Railwaymen's Union (NRMU) sat on a dharna on rail tracks against the alleged failure of the police in arresting the culprits, who assaulted some of their members on April 27.

Jalandhar-New Delhi rail traffic was badly disrupted by the protest, which lasted for more than hour beginning 8:30 am.

NRMU convenor Baldev Singh said: “During union recognition elections on April 27, five members including Daljeet Singh, Avtar Singh, Dharmender Singh, Anil Kumar and Somnath were severely injured in an assault by members of the Uttari Railwaymen's Union (URMU).” He added that an FIR was lodged on Tuesday, yet the assailants had not been nabbed.

A passenger Rishita said that she got late for an assignment as the Amritsar Bandra Pashchim Express had to wait for an hour for the protest to clear.

“I do not know the exact reason for the protest, but agitators must realize that they do cause harassment to others.”

Another passenger, Navjeet Singh (70), said that with limited seating space at the platform, senior citizens were finding it difficult to even get a seat.

When contacted, divisional railway manager NC Goyal said, “I am busy in a meeting and will get back to you later.”
