Many students at three schools in Faridkot district won't have anyone to greet on Teacher's Day. The posts are sanctioned, but where are the masters?
Kotkapura's school's fall from grace
From top reputation, Government High School, Aulakh, 13 kilometres from Kotkapura, has slipped into trouble.
Its fall from grace is thanks to its 14 vacancies, less-that-half teacher strength, combined teaching, and Classes 6 to 10 having no specialist subject master.
All the sanctioned posts of mathematics (2), social studies (3) and Hindi (1) teacher are vacant. One of the two sanctioned posts each of science and Punajbi are also empty, and so is the only post each of stitching and tailoring, vocational teacher, and radio and television mechanic.
The lone sanctioned post of clerk and workshop attendant, and two of three approved posts of class-four worker are vacant. With 10 of the teaching-staff posts and four of class-three and class-four employee untaken, the school could hardly maintain its status.
"Four teachers left after promotion, and another four after transfer," said a teacher. "Our school was one of the best in the district. Even children of private schools migrated to it. Its 300 students, half of which are girls, now sit in the open since we have combined the sections.
Two teachers for school of 90
Government Middle School, Baggeana, in the district has only two teachers (one of social studies and another of Punjabi). Its sanctioned posts of science, hindi, and physical training master are vacant. The two remaining teachers find it tough to run the school of 90 students. Sometimes, temporary teachers are hired.
"We don't have any science teacher for the past two years and Hindi teacher for about 18 months," said a class-8 student at the Baggeana school. "Studies have suffered."
No master for critical subjects
All the two sanctioned posts of science teacher at Government High School, Kotsukhia, are vacant for the past two years. "A science teacher is deployed now under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, but studies lost are lost," said a teacher. "We have 10 sections for 290 students in Classes 6 to 10."
Students aren't well educated in the critical subjects of mathematics and science, and aren't well prepared for any competitive examination.
Adjusting surplus teachers: DEO
The rationalisation of posts is underway, if the authorities are to be believed. "We are adjusting surplus teachers against vacant posts," district education officer (secondary) Baljeet Singh Brar said in reply to a query about the measures. "The government will also recruit new teachers."
