Independent member of legislative assembly (MLA) from Ludhiana south Balwinder Singh Bains and his supporters were detained when they were on their way to gherao chief minister’s official residence in Chandigarh on Wednesday morning.

Balwinder and his brother Simarjit Singh Bains had on Monday announced that they, along with members of team ‘Insaaf’, formed by them, would protest in front of the residence of Punjab CM Parkash Singh Badal and demand his resignation against the government’s failure to stop incidents of sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib.

However, as soon as Balwinder started from Ludhiana on Wednesday, they were traced by the police near Vardhman mills on Chandigarh Road. A total of 21 people, including members of team Insaaf and Balwinder, were immediately detained by the police after some altercation between the two. Independent councillor Gurpreet Khurana owing allegiance to Bains was also detained with him.

All the detainees were kept at Jamalpur police station. Police commissioner Paramraj Singh Umra Nangal said, “All persons have been taken into preventive custody, as they were going towards chief minister’s residence in Chandigarh.

Sources said that police was keeping a vigil on Bains brothers after Monday after their announcement to hold a protest in front of the CM’s residence.

Balwinder said, “The condition in Punjab has gone from bad to worse with the state government failing to stop the incidents of sacrilege of the holy book of Sikh community. There is no place for “such a government” in hearts of people of the state, who are hurt due to the incident.”

Division Number 7 police have booked Balwinder Bains and his supporters under Sections 107/151 (apprehension of breach of peace and tranquility of the area) of the CrPC.

MLA Simarjit Bains arrested in Chandigarh

Meanwhile, Simarjit Bains was also detained by the police in Chandigarh, as he was able to deceive Ludhiana police and move forward towards chief minister’s residence.

The Chandigarh police used water cannons and batons to disperse the members of Team Insaaf led by independent MLA from Atam Nagar in Ludhiana Simarjit Singh Bains, when they were holding a protest in front of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal’s residence against the desecration of ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib in some parts of the state. The police detained Bains and as many as 20 of his supporters. They were booked under Section 107/151 of the CrPC and later were released on SDM’s order.

Talking to HT, one of the protesters, Preet Inder Pal Singh, said their aim was to mount pressure on the government to arrest the culprits and take measures to stop such incidents in future. He said that they were holding a peaceful protest when the police used force against them. Sector 3, Chandigarh, station house officer said the protesters were detained as they had violated the Section 144 imposed in the area.

Meanwhile, Ludhiana police have also booked Simarjit, who escaped Ludhiana police, under Sections 353, 332, 149, 186 and 188 of the IPC.
