One arrested for assaulting woman constable, another for harassing minor girl

Women and girls in the city continue to be victims of various crimes irrespective of their age or status. Even woman head constables in the city face the risk of being assaulted every now and then. The police have arrested one person identified as Amit Kumar, a resident of Katra Dullo wala, on charges of misbehaving with and assaulting sub inspector Harjit Kaur, a woman head constable with the traffic police.

"The accused parked his motorcycle on the road in Karmon Deori area where Kaur was on duty. She asked him not to park his vehicle there, but the accused misbehaved with and assaulted her," said sub inspector Kashmir Singh, of E division police station. He further added the accused had been arrested.

"A case has been registered against him under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of duty) and 354 (assault or crimimnal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code," said Singh.

A 13-year-old girl, who studies in Class 9 of a senior secondary school in Dhab Khatikan, has alleged a resident of Haripura area of teasing and threatening to throw acid on her. She also alleged the man threatened her of dire consequences if she resisted him. The police have booked a man identified as Ram Kumar in this incident involving the minor girl.

A case was registered against the accused under sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 354 (assault or crimimnal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 11 (sexual harassment of the child) and 12 (three years and fine) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

Sub inspector Harjit Kaur, of E division police station, where the girl filed her complaint, said the complainant's father ran a tea stall near the Amritsar railway station and the accused would tease the girl on her way to school or at her father's tea stall.

"As per the girl, the accused had threatened to throw acid on her if she refused to marry him and even dared to enter her house on June 17, but absconded on facing resistance from the girl's father and domestic help," said Kaur. She further added efforts were being made to arrest the accused. Around nine cases of rape involving minor girls have been reported this year alone.
