Mewa Singh (35), an under trial lodged at the Faridkot modern jail escaped from the civil hospital here on Tuesday where he was admitted two days ago for the treatment of hernia. He was reportedly found missing early Tuesday morning.
Mewa Singh, son of Dara Singh, is a resident of Jassi Bagh wali of Bathinda district, and was arrested by Lambi police of Muktsar district on charges of murder on July 31 this year.
"Security was a major issue as there were two security personnel on duty in the civil hospital on Wednesday while as per the jail manual, the number of personnel should be four per jail inmate admitted in hospital to keep a round-the-clock vigil on them," claimed a source.
The incidents of escape by inmates admitted for treatment are common. Gurwinder Singh, son of Resham Singh, a resident of Kor Singh wala village, had given the slip to three security personnel from GGS medical college, Faridkot, on May 23 where he was admitted for treatment.
Before him, Rajan Sharma (26) had escaped from the civil hospital on March 1 where he was admitted after an alleged suicide attempt. He was an under trial in a murder case. "Police have registered a case on the complaint of the jail authorities and all the action possible is being taken in this regard," said Jaswinder Singh, SHO city Faridkot.
Apart from the one under trial who escaped, two jail inmates died of their ailments.
Mangal Singh (32), a resident of Doda village of Muktsar district, died in Guru Gobind Singh medical college where he was admitted for the treatment of tuberculosis. Mangal Singh was arrested by Kotbhai police of Muktsar district on February 22, 2012, in a murder case and was sentenced by the court to life imprisonment. He was brought to Faridkot jail in October last year.
Singh was allegedly suffering from some disease of the abdomen and was admitted to GGS medical college from where he was referred to PGI Chandigarh.
Another under trial, Dharminder Singh alias Sonu (30), a resident of Tibbi Sahib road in Muktsar, was reported to have died at PGI Chandigarh on Tuesday night. He was arrested by the Muktsar police in a case of theft on March 13 last year and was lodged in Faridkot modern jail since March 19 last year.
"There was no lapse on the part of the security personnel as far as the case of the escaped prisoner is concerned. We have sent a police complaint for the registration of a case in this regard," said Baljeet Singh, DSP of modern jail, Faridkot.
"The other two who died last night at PGI Chandigarh and GGS medical college were suffering from ailments and were rushed to the respective hospitals for the best treatment possible. The due procedure is being followed in their cases," he said.
