Politics has started brewing over the ambitious Ludhiana metro rail project, with the opposition accusing the MC officials of ignoring crucial projects of public importance by being busy with the metro project.
After the metro rail project was announced, the MC officials have almost forgotten about other pending projects of public concern, they claimed.
District Congress Committee president Pawan Dewan said, "The Ludhiana MC has failed to provide basic amenities to people in city and is working only on the metro project. They are dependent on the central government for funds as they don't have their own resources for the metro," Dewan said.
He added that, "The MC is not able to complete projects like Lakkar Bridge, Buddha Nullah etc. and the officials are busy in conducting surveys for it. The other projects of public importance are being ignored by them."
He further added that some of the senior officials of the MC were assigned the task of conducting a survey on the metro route along with a team of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), which has delayed several other projects and surveys in city.
Punjab Congress president and former chief minister, Amrinder Singh during a rally on Friday had said that the roads in city may be dug up for the metro, but there won't be any positive outcome.
Senior officials of the MC involved in metro work include senior town planner (STO) Hemant Batra, assistant commissioner (technical) HS Khosa and MC commissioner RK Verma, who himself has been designated as the MD of the project.
Several meetings have been conducted regarding the project in the past and DMRC is working as a consultancy agency in it.
Some of the major projects that the MC has not been able to complete on deadlines include, Indoor stadium on the Pakhowal road, Lakkar Bridge project, covering of Ganda Nullah and Expressway along the Sidhwan Canal among other projects.
