Asha Rani, a woman working in an orchestra, was shot in the lower part of the abdomen on Tuesday night at the wedding where her troupe was performing.

A young man from Langhewala village in Moga district is reported to have fired upon the woman when she resisted his advances. The incident occurred at Khacchad village near Jaitu town in this district Faridkot

Chamkaur Singh of Khacchad village had arranged the party and invited the orchestra to celebrate the wedding of his son. The firing took place around 10pm when some youth at the function asked for a certain dance number. Some witnesses said the ugly incident was the result of the man's advances towards the performer.

The Jaitu police charged Navdeep Singh, son of the host's sister, with attempt to murder under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) but that was only after a delay of many hours.

The woman's condition is critical, as the bullet damaged her intestines and required her to go into surgery at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital, Faridkot.

Senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Toor confirmed the registration of a first-information report (FIR). He said he had visited the hospital and spoken with the doctors. The police did not disclose where she was from.
