With Saturday being the last day of filing nomination papers for panchayat polls, 4,628 candidates have filed their nominations for sarpanches and 15,645 for panches.
At most places, it is Congress vs the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), but in some villages, it is SAD vs SAD as the candidates fail to reach a compromise to file a single nomination.
No political party is contesting the election on the party symbol.
The district has to elect 1,007 panchayats and 6,030 panches.
Various candidates along with their supporters thronged the offices nominated for collecting the nomination papers and filed their papers.
The nomination process started on June 19.
“The scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on June 24 and the candidates can withdraw their nominations till June 25,” said Anindita Mitra, ADC (development). She said the list of the unanimous election would be finalised on the last day of the withdrawal.
The polling and counting for the panchayat elections would take place on July 3, she said.
