The Punjab Athletics Association (PAA) conducted trials for track and field events at the Guru Nanak Dev Stadium to select best athletes for the upcoming Federation Cup to begin from August 16 in Patiala.

More than 300 athletes from all districts turned up at the stadium for trials on Saturday. After successfully conducting trials in the morning session, the organisers had to stop the session midway due to the heavy rain. The selection process could be resumed only after two hours.

KPS Brar, general secretary, Punjab Athletic Association, said, "The athletes selected here will take part in the Federation Cup to be held in Patiala on August 16. Based on their performance in the Federation Cup, players will be further selected for the Asian Games to be held in September."

Sarbjit Singh, an athletics coach and member of the selection panel, said, "Though the turnout for the trials was good, apart from short distance track events, performance of players in the state has not improved much. This is the last chance for all who aspire to play in Asian Games."However, the final list of players was not available when the story was filed.
