As many as 40,780 residents of the district are interested, as new voters, to exercise their franchise for the first time. A total of 17,769 are under the age of 18 to 19 while remaining 23011 are above 19.
The administration had started an awareness campaign in a drive to reach potential voters. As per the details, people belonging to rural belt have come in high numbers from urban areas’ residents at voting centres to submit form-6, (an application for inclusion of name in the electoral roll).
In Shahkot assembly segment, the district received 6,126 forms followed by Phillaur (reserve) seat with 6,067. From Nakodar, 5,576 forms while in Adampur (reserve), 4470 were submitted. Kartarpur (reserve) has recorded 4,018 people filling for enrolment. At urban seats, a total of 4,387 people in north constituency, 4,099 in the cantonment, 3,867 in central and 2170 forwarded their forms to the district through booth level officers. “This special campaign for revision of electoral rolls was held from 7 September to 7 October,” said an official.
The official added that a verification drive will be carried out. The special program Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) is run by the district administration in collaboration with non-governmental organisations.
Apart from SVEEP, the administration had also started a campaign in schools, colleges and used social media sources. “The programs have helped a lot in motivating residents, especially youths, in rural areas,” added an official. After completion of drive, a fresh voter list will be published on January 1, 2017, with inclusion of their names, the official told.
