Though the state government had issued a notification to reduce the fee at parking lots to provide relief to the visitors, the municipal corporation (MC) has failed to keep a check on the ongoing overcharging at the multi-storey parking lot, which is just 100m away from the offices of mayor, commissioner and additional commissioners.

Sources said the parking staff is fleecing the visitors under the nose of authorities who have failed to get the actual parking rates displayed outside the lot for convenience of the visitors. The MC had issued a notice to the parking contractor for overcharging, but nothing has been done to improve the parking system.

Old parking rates - Rs 20 for car and Rs 10 for two-wheelers - can be seen displayed at the lot, instead of the new prescribed rates - Rs 10 for car and Rs 5 for two-wheelers. It was recommendation by the government to charge `5 for two wheelers and Rs 10 for four wheelers.

When HT team visited the parking lot, the staff working for the contractor was found charging Rs 30 for parking a car. Moreover, they are even charging Rs 20 for parking four-wheelers from some persons. If anybody argues with them, they charge Rs 10.

The conditions of agreement - was signed around six months ago - direct that it is the responsibility of contractor to charge only the prescribed parking fee. Even against the claims of MC, the contractor has not introduced e-ticketing system.

A resident, Ravi Sharma said, “I complained to the mayor about the ongoing fleecing at the parking lot, but nothing has been done in this regard. Even no new parking rates have been displayed at the lot. The contractor should be blacklisted as overcharging is on since the MC signed agreement earlier this year.”

“For parking of a four-wheeler Rs 30 are being charged, while contractor is also charging fee from the vehicles parked outside the lot,” he alleged.

HT had highlighted the issue of overcharging many times, but there is no check on the ill-practice.

Mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria, said, “I will look into the matter and take required steps if any violation is found at the lot. I will ensure display of prescribed parking rates.”
