Demanding immediate disbursal of their dues, hundreds of palledars (mandi labourers) held a protest and blocked traffic near the Lal Batti Chowk here on Monday.Protesting under the banner of the Punjab Palledar Union, the protesters moved towards the mini-secretariat building raising anti-government slogans.
Addressing the gathering, the union's state president Sukhdev Singh Budhlada said that even after two months of procurement of paddy in the mandis of the district, palledars have not got their payment for unloading paddy and the poor labourers are finding it hard to earn a square meal for their families.
The palledars also demanded abolition of the thekedari system in the mandis. The union also demanded that the share of 13.61% in EPF should be contributed by the Punjab government and the state procurement instead of deducting the entire 25.61% from the employees' share. They threatened to go on hunger strike if their demands were not met.
