Jogindernagar sub division pradhan Ranjeet Chauhan after getting frustrated over the non-responsive attitude over repeated correspondence by local block development office (BDO), Chauntra, district rural development agency (DRDA) and the state government, sat on a day-long dharna in support of his demands, outside BDO office, Chauntra, on Friday.

Ranjeet, who is also an advocate and right to information (RTI) activist, alleged that it was not the state or central government, but the local implementing agencies of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS) responsible for the failure of nation flagship scheme.

Ranjeet spoke to HT at Mandi on Sunday and said that development work in Chauntra block was on a standstill since March 2014 and the attitude of officers concerned.

“There are 17,672 families, who are job card holders under MNREGA in 40 gram panchayat of the Chauntra block and only 1,03,631 days jobs have been provided so far, which means the average ratio comes to nearly 7 days work and earning of `1,000 for each family in a year. The figures are shocking” said Ranjeet.

He said that the government department concerned and its officers simply reply to his queries and request that funds were not available, but the fact was just opposite to their excuses.

Ranjit said that the farmers were facing monkey menace and wild animal attacks on agriculture crops and condition of the farmers, who depend on rains for the sowing seeds in the fields, were facing draught like situation due to no rains from last more than three months.

“Jobs under MNREGA can give them a helping hand and means of survival, but I do not know why the government and the local implementing agencies are not thinking of the welfare of these people. These officers are getting heavy salary and perks every month, thus can not feel the pinch of empty pocket, scarcity of food, hunger and unemployment the farmers used to face” he said.

He warn the government that either provide budget and jobs to poor farmers in Chauntra block otherwise he would give a call to the farmers to assemble and gherao BDO office in future.
