Putting an end to a controversial tenure of less than two months in which he claimed that the city’s mayor had threatened him and he allegedly threatened a journalist himself, the Haryana government transferred Panchkula MC commissioner Shaleen Kumar on Monday.
Ashok Kumar Meena, director, development, and panchayats and rural development, will take additional charge as the Panchkula MC commissioner.
Shaleen, who had joined on May 18, has been designated as additional secretary in the finance department.
On Saturday, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar had told a delegation of journalists to wait till Monday for action against the commissioner.
Shaleen had allegedly threatened Dainik Bhaskar reporter Sanjeev Rampal as he wrote a story on his leave period and pending files in the office. The report had appeared in the paper on Thursday.
Panchkula journalists had sat on dharna outside MC office throughout Friday. The situation was finally lifted on Saturday morning after an assurance from the CM.
Before Saturday’s truce, the situation had turn ugly on Friday as 200 sanitation workers came out in support of Shaleen and raised slogans against journalists. The workers also brought their tractor trolleys filled with garbage to park them close to the place where journalists were sitting. Heavy police deployment had to be made to defuse the situation.
The Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) had also extended support to journalists and on Friday an effigy of Shaleen was also burnt. Shaleen couldn’t be contacted for comments.
Shaleen, who was earlier ADC Yamunanagar, was shifted to Panchkula MC after the state government transferred previous commissioner Lalit Siwach on a rap from the Punjab and Haryana high court.
