The police here on Friday rounded up six family members, including the mother, stepfather and maternal uncle, of a girl from Khanna who was found to have been raped, strangulated to death and then thrown into a canal. After the body of the girl was found in a canal in Dhanaula, around 15km from here, on August 4, and the post-mortem confirmed rape and murder, the police had suspected the hand of the girl's family who may have killed her over her alleged love affairs.

Though the police refused to confirm the names of those brought from Khanna to Barnala late night on Thursday, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Surjit Singh said the case would be cracked in day or two. "On the basis of circumstantial evidence, we are trying to put together the sequences of events," he said.

The girl, a student of class 12 at a government school in Khanna, was suspected to have committed suicide. But after the post-mortem, a case was registered under sections 302 (murder) and 376 (rape) of the IPC, which is so far against "unknown persons".

The girl had left for school around 8.30 am on July 30 but did not reach school. Her bag was found near the Doraha canal at Katani Sahib village, and passersby who found her mobile phone called her mother around 9:15am. The missing report was registered with the Khanna City police station only on August 3.
