While there is a flurry of complaints regarding overcharging from various parking lots in the city, visitors to the Feroze Gandhi Market are a relieved lot as the parking lots here are being temporarily managed by the municipal corporation (MC).
Auction for these parking lots, along with other five other parking sites in the city, was held on June 5. However, the highest bidder for Feroze Gandhi market failed to pay the required amount to get contract. Therefore, MC took over the reins of the parking lots here. Re-auction is likely to be held in the coming week.
However, traders are demanding from MC to deploy its own staff for parking lots for more time on trial basis, as that way fleecing could be reduced to a large extent.
According to the Traders and Property Owners’ Association o f Feroze Gandhi Market Ludhiana, there were no complaints against the parking attendants since the MC took control.
“We have installed complaint boxes and displayed our contact numbers. But no complaint was filed. Earlier, when these parking lots were being run by a contractor, we were getting 5 to 10 complaints daily,” said Col (Retd) Harjap Singh, chairman of the association.
“However, parking rates were still old and different from the rest of the city, as the new rates would be implemented after reauction of the parking lots,” he added.
Earlier, Hindustan Times had highlighted that parking fee was being charged from vehicles parked inside yellow line on road, against the parking norms. The area marked by a yellow line is reserved for fire tenders.
But when this correspondent visited the market on Saturday, the visitors claimed that they were not being charged for parking for a few minutes inside the yellow line. However, some vehicles were seen wrongly parked in the area against which the traffic wing is supposed to take action.
“We have no complaints as the MC employees are doing their duty properly. Before the MC took over the parking lots, fee was illegally being charged from vehicles inside yellow line as well. MC should deploy its staff for parking for at least three months as trial basis,” said Simartej Singh, a regular visitor to the market.
An MC employee deployed at the market said, “We charge fee as mentioned on parking slips. We don’t charge fee from the vehicles that are being parked on road. We are following all directions of the MC commissioner.”
