The patch work done by the Public Works Department (PWD) on the road from Jyoti Sarup Chowk to Chungi number 4 in Sirhind could not survive even a single night.
The repair was part of the preparations for the Shaheedi Jor Mela. The patch work, which was done on Tuesday evening, disturbed traffic on Wednesday morning as the poor quality material could not stay fixed to the road, even for a single night.
A budget of Rs 32 lakh was released for the repair of the road from Suhana village to Sirhind.
"This usually happens because of low temperature as the changing weather does not let the premix stick to the road. However, I will inquire into the matter," said Naresh Walia, executive engineer (XEN), Fatehgarh Sahib.
He added, "Maybe the contractor did not follow the instructions and used poor quality material to repair the road. We will inquire into the matter and ask the contractor to repair the road again. We will not pay him till he repairs the entire stretch with good quality material."
Kuljit Singh Nagra, Fatehgarh Sahib MLA, said, "This is the kind of work done in the name of development. Everytime, right ahead of the Shaheedi Jor Mela, money is released for development purposes and this is the end result."
He added, "The situation is miserable and will only prove dangerous to vehicles. We want officials to take action instead of making excuses. People want action against culprits."
During the preparations of Jor Mela last year too, the patch work was done by some contractors on the same road. It was only after media highlighted the issue and requests were made by the public that the road was repaired with good quality material.
