One person was killed while three others were feared dead as the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a river in Drass area of Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.

“A private vehicle met with an accident and fell into Drass river near Jasgund village on Leh-Srinagar national highway. Four persons were on board the vehicle,” a police spokesman said.

He said a rescue operation had been launched by the police and civil administration; and so far only the vehicle and one body had been retrieved.

The deceased has been identified as Arjun Singh, a resident of Basant Colony in Pathankot area of Punjab. Three others -- Bittu Singh, Gulshan Singh and Ratan Singh, all residents of Pathankot -- are still missing.

“Rescue operation is still going on despite the fast flow of the river,” he added.
