The court of additional and district sessions judge Mohammed Gulzar on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Pathankot municipal corporation commissioner JP Singh till September 29.

A vigilance bureau team led by Amritsar SSP Upinderjit Singh Ghumman had arrested the Singh from his house at Chak Madho Singh village in Pathankot district, while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.5 lakh from one builder Prabal Sharma of Pathankot.

Singh was remanded in vigilance bureau custody for one day each on August 31 and July 1 by the courts of additional chief judicial magistrate Harpreet Kaur and judicial magistrate Ist class Amandeep Kaur Chohan, respectively. He was then sent to Gurdaspur Central Jail until September 15.

However, the Pathankot municipal corporation employees' union had supported Singh and termed him an honest officer.

Singh's wife Balwinder Kaur had written a letter to Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice, alleging that her husband had been framed in a false case of graft at the instance of a group of influential persons, who had suffered losses due to the anti-encroachment drive launched by him.

She had alleged that her husband been a victim of political vendetta and professional jealousy.
