Police on Saturday claimed to have busted an extortion gang with the arrest of four persons, including a woman, who posed as cops to blackmail people and seized extortion money, a vehicle and firearms from their possession in Samana town of the district.

The accused, who posed as Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) officials, have been identified as Anita Rani, who faked as DSP, Sania Brar; Kuldeep Singh alias Faldeep of Kaithal in Haryana; Pargat Singh of Baghroul village in Sangrur and Manjit Singh of Patran in Patiala district.

They allegedly threatened people with registering police cases against them. Rs 22,000 extortion money, a Chevrolet Tavera, a country-made .12 bore pistol and two cartridges have been recovered from them.

They were produced on Saturday in a Samana court which sent them to two-day police remand.

In a press conference, SP (investigations) Patiala Harvinder Singh Virk said their fifth accomplice is still absconding.

Virk said the accused barged into the house of a Samana resident, Sooraj Kumar, posing as CIA staff and threatened to register a drug case against him. When Sooraj Kumar refused to pay money, they took him to Sangrur and let him off only after receiving `22,000 from his family, the SP said.

Sooraj complained to the police about this, leading to their arrest, the SP added. A case has been registered against the accused and further investigations are on.
