The body of the missing father of the prime accused in the May 4 Sanvi Gupta (4) kidnapping case was on Sunday fished from a canal at Khanauri in Sangrur district.
The girl who was kidnapped is daughter of Patiala businessman Amit Gupta. After engineering graduate Deepak Kumar was accused of being the mastermind behind the crime and arrested last Sunday, his father, Raj Kumar (47), had disappeared on Wednesday, leaving a suicide note on the banks of the Bhakra canal. After four days of search, divers have now recovered his body from the neighbouring district. The autopsy will be conducted on Monday at Rajindra Medical College here.
Raj Kumar’s family says he was shocked at the alleged involvement of his son in the kidnapping and, in that depression, had jumped into the canal. His suicide note typed on a computer alleged threat to his family from the influential Guptas. The note along with his motorcycle, mobile phone, shoes and other articles was found on the Bhakra Canal bank near Passiana. Passiana station house officer (SHO) Gurdeep Singh says he has briefed the higher officials.
Sanvi Gupta was kidnapped on her way to school and later released. The family claimed a ransom was paid, while police claim the child is safe because of their pressure. Deepak was known to Sanvi’s father.
