A cop on traffic duty on Gill road near Arora Palace on Friday arrested a Patiala resident after recovering a fake police identity card from him.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Balkar Singh of traffic wing said he was checking vehicles near Arora Palace at Gill road on Thursday. Meanwhile, a man riding a two-wheeler tried to escape on spotting the police. However, the police nabbed him and asked him to present his identification.

The accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh, claimed that he was a cop and presented a police identification card, which the ASI found was fake. The ASI sounded the Shimlapuri police station and handed over the accused to them.

Inspector Satnam Singh said a case under section 171 (wearing garb or carrying token used by public servant with fraudulent intent) and 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) had been registered against the accused.
