Springing into action, the Patiala municipal corporation on Thursday uprooted substandard tiles at Bindra Colony locality, two days after HT highlighted as how a private contractor was using non-ISI mark tiles for laying road.

Mayor Amarinder Singh Bajaj said he had written to MC commissioner Indu Malhotra to blacklist the contractor and take action against the municipal staff that did not check the material when the contractor began work in the locality.

More than 700 feet of road was covered with non-ISI mark tiles, in violation of government norms.

The Punjab government had guidelines in this regard a year ago, maintaining that tiles used for the construction of roads, footpaths or any other development work should have ISI mark to ensure quality.

These issues are overlooked here as several inquiries are already pending regarding use of substandard tiles. Recently, a vigilance team of the local bodies department inspected the parking area that was allegedly constructed with substandard material. Inquiry in this regard is still pending.
