Municipal corporation (MC) has reportedly misguided the state government over the status of road works in Patiala as several road works are yet to be started on ground but otherwise began in the compliance report that was recently submitted to the government department.

Last month, additional chief secretary Satish Chandra, who is the head of local government department, visited Patiala to inspect city’s development works which are being undertaken under a special state grant ahead of the 2017 assembly polls.

MC stated in its report that out of 144 works planned in February, 101 works were successfully rolled out, of which 36 works have already completed and 43 works will start by the end of this month.

However, the ground situation is very different. The report claimed that the construction work of laying interlocking tiles is underway over the road stretch from Kali Devi temple to Dharamshala, in ward number 24, with 10% work already completed. But a visit to the site proved that not even a single brick has been laid so far. Similarly, the work of laying interlocking tiles in the Bank Colony near Amar Hospital is a non-starter even as it was marked as commenced in the report.

In ward number 5, the laying of mix seal in Ekta Vihar, Deep Nagar, and Anand Nagar is shown 5% completed whereas the ground status is nil.

In ward number 13, improvement of roads near FCI godowns, Azaad Nagar and Sukhram Colony was incorrectly shown as 20% completed, since there is no construction work done so far.

A senior official said that there was a major fudging in the progress report of other under-constructed works as well.

The progress of works from ward number 1 to 21 is very slow, but the progress shown in the report is over-rated.

Local Congress MLA Brahm Mohindra said that the delay in the execution of development work is a clear referendum on the ruling government’s performance and exposes the falsehood of their tall claims of development.

“Laying new roads just before the assembly elections will not fetch them votes as people are smart enough to understand these election gimmicks, he added.

Meanwhile, the renovation work of Rajindra Lake too, is held up at present.

Given the present pace of work, the construction of all road work will not be completed before December, whereas the initial deadline was June, said sources.

MC’s jurisdiction covers the entire of Patiala urban assembly segment and 60% area of the Patiala rural segment. As Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) is eyeing on the Patiala rural segment, the delay in development projects may dent their prospects.

The fact, that work orders of another Rs 14 crore are still at the tendering stage, is one more cause of worry for the ruling government.

When contacted, MC commissioner PS Gill said that he will look into the matter and call for the explanation of the engineering department, which complied the status report of the underconstruction works.
