Patiala MP Dr Dharamvira Gandhi met minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj at her residence in New Delhi on Tuesday and discussed with her the plight of Punjabis stranded in trouble-torn Iraq. Conveying fear and agony of Punjabi families, Gandhi requested the minister to take all necessary steps to ensure safe return of those stranded in Iraq.

Gandhi said the minister had assured him that they were contacting and helping Indians to fly back on 'quick mode' passports, for which the Indian authorities had made all arrangement.

Gandhi said the minister also told him that due to fierce battle in Tikrit and Mosul, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) and Iraq forces especially along the road leading to Baghdad and nearest airport, it would not be safe to evacuate Indian nurses and other Indians stuck in both the areas.

Meanwhile, Gandhi welcomed the Punjab government's decision of providing financial assistance of Rs 20,000 a month to the distressed families of 40 Punjabis stuck in conflict-affected Mosul town in Iraq and also urged the government to provide employment to all victims, who would return to the state in the coming days.
