Two years after alleged anomalies in the purchase of medicines came to fore, the department of health and family welfare has suspended the Patiala district TB control programme centre officer and senior medical officer (SMO) for their alleged involvement in making purchases at higher than the market rates.

The vigilance bureau’s economic offences wing was carrying out an investigation into the matter since 2012 and had recently handed over its report to the health department recommending strict action against the erring officials. The suspended officials are Dr Jawahar Joshi, district TB control programme officer, and SMO Dr Bhupinder Singh, presently posted at Bhadson in Patiala district.

The matter came to light following complaints in purchase of medicines worth Rs 8 lakh done between 2008 and 2012.

It was alleged that the medicines and other material were purchased at 15 to 20 times higher than the market rates and certain norms required while making a government purchase were violated.

Vinnie Mahajan, principal secretary, health and family welfare, said they will cross-check the role of the civil surgeons who have served at Patiala during that period.
