The old couple Khem Chand and Kamlesh Rani were murdered on the night of January 23, but the bodies were found on January 29, when neighbours complained of a foul smell coming from the house.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurmeet Singh Chauhan said that the station house officer (SHO) Rajpura Shaminder Singh carried out the investigation and that there was a scarcity of clues as the son was in the Navy and used to stay away.
SSP said that during investigation the police found that Fatehgarh Sahib district resident Sikandar Singh had an illicit relationship with Monika, daughter-in-law of the couple. He said that the old couple was having some doubts over Monica's relationship, and that the latter had even had arguments with them on the issue.
He said that actually Sikandar planned the murder after he came to know that old couple has lot of valuable items and gold in his house. Monica briefed him about the whereabouts of the gold which was kept under lock and key in different parts of the house.
While Monica wanted to get rid of her in-laws, the accused wanted easy money by looting the house.
SHO Shaminder Singh said that the accused on day of crime entered the house from the backdoor and strangled the couple to death. After that he threw some cigarettes, foil paper used by drug addicts and some quantity of smack and empty bottles of cold drink, to make it look like the crime had been committed by drug addicts.
He said that apart from the Monica and Sikandar, the police has also arrested two other persons who aided them. The accused have been taken in police remand for further interrogation. The police feel that the accused might have a criminal history.
