These cases have been booked out of a total of 150 cases lodged with the police.

Following a volley of such thefts, the irrigation department launched a drive to check the illegal diversion of water.

Bhakra main line circle superintending engineer ML Garg said farmers were finding it difficult to irrigate their fields due to the deficient monsoon.

He added the department had found that farmers drew water illegally from distributaries.

"Earlier, we had let them off with just a warning, but now we have decided to lodge complaints to curb the malpractice," said Garg.

A case was booked against the accused under section 430 (wrongfully diverting water) of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused were identified as Bittu Singh of Baguhra, Avtar Singh of Ghanaur, Vazir Singh of Kishangarh, Sukha Singh, Avtar Singh and Ratan Singh of Devi Nagar, Mohinder Singh of Dakala, Darshan Singh of Bijalpur, Bhola Singh, Charan Singh and Jaspal Singh of Kheri Pattan and Bhindu Singh of Kheri Chahuan.
