157 panchayats elected unopposed in Patiala district

With gram panchayat elections round the corner, out of 1,007 panchayats, office bearers of 157 panchayats have been elected unopposed in Patiala district.

Bhunerheri block has registered maximum 46 unopposed panchyats, besides 25 panchayats in Nabha block, 18 each in Samana and Sanaur blocks, 17 in Patran, 13 in Rajpura, 12 in Patiala and 8 panchayats in Ghanaur block.

Additional deputy commissioner Anindita Mitra said around 46.12% of panchayat members have been elected unanimously. Out of total 6,029 wards, 2,781 panches have been elected unopposed from different blocks.

Meanwhile, 198 sarpanches have been elected unopposed. The Punjab government has already announced Rs. 1 lakh cash prize for panchayat elected unopposed.

In Sangrur district, only 33 panchayats of 599 have been elected unopposed. The total number of sarpanches elected is  52, while 1,606 members have been elected unopposed.

Bhagwant meets UK deputy high commissioner
