16 get life term in double murder case

A district court here has awarded life sentence to 16 persons, including one woman, in a double murder case of 2008 related to panchyat poll violence. Following the violence, a father and son died of bullet injuries at Kishangarh Gurthali village.

The court of the additional district and session judge Jatinder Kaur has also imposed a fine of `2.31 lakh on the accused.

The case was registered on the statement of Gurmel Singh, who had charged the accused with the murder of his brother Gurcharan Singh, who won the village panch elections. The accused Amrik Singh lost the sarpanch elections as Gurcharan voted against him in the capacity of village panch.

Upset over this, Amrik murdered Gurcharan. His other accomplics  were Karamjit Singh, Jagtar Singh, Jora Singh, Gurdhian Singh, Harkesh Singh, Gobind Singh, Ranjit Singh, Bachan Singh, Jarnail Singh, Harbans Singh, Gurdeep Singh, Gurnam Singh, Balwinder Singh and Karamjit Kaur.

The case related to Kishangarh Gurthali village, when during the elections, Amrik Singh and Nahar Singh were competing for the post of village sarpanch. Amrik Singh was having support of two members while Nahar was having the support of three panches.

Amrik needed one vote of Gurcharan.To pressurize him he, using his influence approached the authorities for the demarcation of the residence of the deceased citing that he had encroached upon the public property.  However, when Gurcharan refused to  succumb to the pressure, the accused  opened fired at him in which he was killed. His son, Chamkaur Singh, was also injured in the firing. He later succumbed to the injuries at a hospital.

The court held the accused guilty on charges of murder, rioting and conspiracy and awarded life sentences to all.
