200 fined for over-speeding in 10 days

The traffic police has fined over 200 over-speeding vehicles in the district over the last ten days.

The traffic wing does not own a speed-gun, but the challans were issued using an interceptor vehicle borrowed from the Chandigarh police. The vehicle has now been handed over to the Fatehgarh Sahib police, which will carry out a drive against over-speeding on Friday.

District traffic in-charge Hardeep Singh said that the interceptor vehicle had helped keep an intensive tab on defaulters and helped people make aware of speeding rules.

He said besides light four wheelrs, heavy vehicles including buses and trucks had also been issued challans.

"Heavy vehicles were especially targeted as the drivers usually violate traffic norms with impunity and are found overspeeding quite often," he added.

Sources said last month's Sirhind bus tragedy had led the police to take such action.

A senior police official said that the state government should provide such vehicles to all districts on a permanent basis to help lower accidents and save lives.
