On Sunday, the parents of these girls who had come from far-off places in Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, and Jagraon areas collected sponsorship cheques on behalf of their children from trust president Dr Harshinder Kaur. Along with her husband, Dr Gurpal Singh, she had been combating the menace of female feticide in Punjab.

"During our job in the medical field, we observed that parents did not invested in the education of girls because of poverty and non-productivity," said Dr Harshinder Kaur.

"Poor parents, though, maked their best effort to educate their sons in private schools, while they send girls to the government schools, where basic infrastructure was minimum,” she added.

The trust created in 2008 offers get contribution to its noble mission from some expatriates and local doctors. “The monthly tuition fee of the girls we select for sponsorship is sent to the schools concerned," said Dr Harshinder Kaur. "The girls selcted have no family land or means of regular income. Either or father is no more or single parent is bringing them up. With the limited resources at our command, we are able to sponsor their education till Class 10 alone.”

The trust, so far, has put 328 girls in school, of which 180 finished Class 10 in 2013.
