Five people were killed and eight others were injured in separate road accidents in different parts of the district.
According to information, in the first mishap, a tempo collided with a bus, killing a man. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Kumar, cleaner of the tempo.
The accident took place on Bhawanigarh-Mansa road near Mehlan Chowk on Sunday morning as the speeding bus rammed into the tempo coming from the Patran side. The bus driver failed to control the vehicle, which hit a tree on the roadside.
Eight people -- Kusam, Geeta, Arvinder Singh, Gurjit Singh, Rupinder Singh, Jaskaran Singh, Abhimanyu Sodhi and Anuj Kumar -- also received serious injuries. The condition of Gurjit and Jaskaran is critical and they were referred to Government Rajindra Hospital.
Investigation officer Hardyal Das said they had registered a case of negligence against Sukhraj Singh, driver of the bus.
Meanwhile, one Darshan Singh died after tractor-trolley driver Amrik Singh ran over the victim while reversing his vehicle at Banera village, near here. Meanwhile, a car ran over an unidentified man on Sunam Road while he was crossing the road. The police are yet to identify the body and have sent it to the civil hospital mortuary. The car driver managed to flee from the spot.
Meanwhile, two motorcyclists died in a road accident on Tapa-Barnala road on Saturday evening.
The victims have been identified as Kiranjit Singh and Ajaib Singh, both residents of Tajaoke village, near Barnala. Both the deceased were minors.
The police said the mishap took place when they were one their way to attend tuition at Tapa. According to eyewitnesses, the boys fell down after hitting a cart and were run over by the truck coming from behind. Both died on the spot. A pall of gloom descended on the village as the two were the only children.
