Ahead of Diwali, the Patiala police have busted a gambling racket involving high-profile people by nabbing 50 of them.

The police have recovered Rs. 23 lakh from them.

Residents of Ambala, Saharanpur, Patiala, Ludhiana, Samrala, Khanna and Rajpura were among those arrested when the police raided a godown here. The police have also impounded 10 luxury vehicles belonging to them.

SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill said the kingpin of the racket was identified as Ashok Mehta. He said the accused had came to Rajpura on Ashok's call, who used to charge them for providing them space for gambling.

A case under the Gambling Act had been registered, he said, adding that the police had stepped up vigil to check gambling during the festive season.
