Gurjant Singh, a 50-year-old government teacher working at a state-run school in Namola village of Sunam in Sangrur district, has been booked on charges of raping a 14-year-old student repeatedly over the past six weeks.
After the girl's father, a brick-kiln labourer, finally approached the police, a first-information report (FIR) was registered on Tuesday. Though medical examination also confirmed intercourse with the Class-8 student, the police have not managed to arrest Gurjant, who lives in the same village and is absconding.
Absent from school for the past five days, he has been suspended by the education department.
The matter came to the father's notice a few days ago after some students found math teacher Gurjant sexually exploiting the girl inside the school. As the students raised the alarm, some teachers informed the parents of the girl.
The father told HT, "She (the victim) told me she was first exploited on December 31 last, when Gurjant had called her to his house on the pretext of evaluating her winter vacation homework and also free tuitions." Then he allegedly kept threatening the girl and even started molesting her on the school premises during working hours.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar said a board of two gynecologists and a surgeon had found that she had been raped. "We have sent her vaginal swab for detailed forensic examination," he added.
A case has been registered under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and raids have been conducted to nab Gurjant.
District education officer (secondary) Nirmal Singh Sohi said, "On directions of the director general of school education (DGSE), math teacher Gurjant Singh has been suspended with immediate effect, and a departmental chargesheet is being prepared against him."
Meanwhile, residents of the village along with some farmer unions and student organisations protested at Sunam and Sangrur demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
The girl's health is reported to be normal.
