Elated at having got the “clean chit” in the Parampreet Kaur murder case by the special investigating team (SIT), former Patiala mayor Jaspal Pardhan along with his family appeared before the media here on Sunday and said he was ready for a CBI probe, as demanded by Parampreet's parents.

In a bid to come out as a strong contender for the post of mayor, Pardhan brought along his wife Surinder Kaur, who told the media that the allegations levelled by Parampreet's family that Pardhan had a “second wife” in Parampreet's mother-in-law Paramjeet Kaur were baseless.

Paramjeet and her son, Harpreet, were the other two accused in the Parampreet murder case; the SIT has held both guilty of murder, while giving the clean chit to Pardhan.

Surinder Kaur said, “Paramjeet had been my foster sister for long. My son, Preetinder, and Harpreet grew up together. This was the reason my husband performed the rites of a father when Harpreet married Parampreet.”

She said whenever her husband visited Paramjeet's family, they were aware of it.

“We are disturbed by the media reports of my husband having a second wife. It was a shock to the family as it has sullied our image. The entire family has full faith in Pardhan and his character and we stand behind him like a rock,” Kaur said.

Pardhan said Parampreet's family was playing into the hands of the Congress as one of her uncles was a Congress member.

“I am ready to provide my DNA sample or whatever Parampreet's family wants. These demands are baseless and politically motivated,” he said.

Pardhan did not rule out the possibility of his own party leaders being behind the “conspiracy” against him.

He said he was again in the race for the mayor. “I will abide by the party high command orders. Whosoever becomes the mayor, I will work with him for the betterment of the party,” he said.
