An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was suspended for allegedly manhandling a woman at Mandi Ahemadgarh police station on Friday.

Senior superintendent of police Harcharan Singh Bhullar said ASI Balwinder Singh was suspended after receiving a complaint that he misbehaved with a woman, Bhupinder Kaur, a resident of ward number 9.

He said deputy superintendent of police (Amargarh) has been asked to conduct an inquiry into the matter. "Strict action will be taken against the ASI on the basis of medical report of the victim," the SSP said.

Bhupinder alleged that ASI Balwinder, posted at Mandi Ahmadgarh police station, came to her house to inquire about some complaint registered regarding their domestic issue.

"The ASI assaulted and abused me at my residence in front of residents of my locality. He also asked me to visit police station after manhandling me," she alleged. "At the police station, the ASI thrashed me with a wooden stick," she alleged.

Taking note of the incident, local residents staged a protest, demanding strict and immediate action against the ASI. DSP (Amargarh) Sukhdev Singh Virk, sensing seriousness of the issue, pacified the protesters and suspended the ASI with immediate effect.
