The CPM has objected to the SGPC's engraving the name of 1980s militant commander Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale on a memorial plaque at the Operation Bluestar memorial inside Harmandar Sahib in Amritsar.

Charan Singh Virdi, secretary of the Punjab state committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), said here on Tuesday that the people who loved communal harmony would be shocked to know that the new memorial at Darbar Sahib included a stone plaque with an engraving that read: “In the memory of the 14th head of Damdami Taksal, martyr Sant Giani Jarnail Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale and all martyrs of 1984.”

"To my mind, it is an unfortunate happening and breach of trust on part of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) leadership," said Virdi. "It is also likely to disturb communal harmony and peace in the state."

Virdi asked chief minister Parkash Singh Badal, deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, and SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar to explain to the people how they planned to repair the damage once it was done. He appealed to the people to calm.
