Former Punjab chief minister and Amritsar MP Capt Amarinder Singh on Tuesday said the countdown for the SAD-BJP government’s downfall would begin with the alliance’s ‘defeat’ in the August 21 byelection in Patiala. Hitting the campaign trail for his wife and Congress candidate Preneet Kaur, Amarinder predicted that the Congress would win Patiala as well as Talwandi Sabo assembly seats.

“This byelection is a referendum on the working of the state government. And all citizens are waiting for the voting day to punish the SAD-BJP alliance for their misrule. The Congress’ victory from Patiala will prove a game-changer in Punjab politics,” said Amarinder.

Addressing public gatherings here, the scion of erstwhile Patiala royalty said the days of the SAD-BJP government were numbered, adding that once the Congress government was formed, the industry would be revived in Punjab.

This is for the first time that Amarinder is holding nukkad rallies in the Patiala Urban seat. Usually, he holds a single rally for the entire constituency.

During an action-packed day, the former CM first held a question-and-answer session with college students. Later, he interacted with the city’s prominent persons at a meeting called by NGOs. In the evening, he addressed street corners rallies, seeking votes for Preneet.

On a question about the law and order situation in Punjab, asked by girl students, Amarinder promised to set up a special task force for women’s security, once the Congress came to power after the 2017 assembly elections.

He promised that the Congress government, once formed, would resume student elections in colleges and universities of the state to ensure that there were officially recognised students’ representative bodies in educational institutions.

During an interaction with members of various rotary clubs of Patiala, Amarinder stated that once the Congress government came to power, it would ensure that investment came to Punjab, like it was during his tenure as CM (2002-07).
