For its appeal to postpone the zila parishad and panchayat elections, Akali leaders condemned the Congress here on Thursday.

The appeal was a sign that the Congress anticipated another election drubbing, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) general secretary Prem Singh Chandumajra told the media here after giving away cheques for development works at Jakhwali, Rattangarh, Jhampur, and Salempur villages.

"A deperate Congress has accuse the SAD of corruption and embezzlement," said Chandumajra. Describing the Congress as disgraced party, the Akali leader said its leadership need not be afraid of any rigging in the elections, as the government would not interfere. If the people of Punjab have discarded the Congress, it’s only because of its own policies," he said.

The Akali leader said the voters had found the Akali-government policies friendly to many sectors, and the Congress had been forced to find an excuse for its inevitable defeat in the upcoming contest.
