Not only women, but children and senior citizens too, would be able to benefit from this helpline number as it could be dialled from any mobile and landline phone free of cost.

Even when the person calling up 1098 was unable to inform the police about his or her whereabouts, the police would track the address or location from where the call was made and would reach to help.

Police sources said the people were aware that a call to the police could be made on 100, but now women, children and senior citizens could call up1098. The call would come to the police control room only, but the matter would be taken up immediately and with utmost seriousness.

Based on the information given, the control room would inform the police party closest to the location which would rush to help the person in duress. This number would be functional around the clock.
