The enforcement directorate (ED) has court's permission to record the statements of expatriate Anoop Singh Kahlon and Devinder Singh "Happy", accused in the high-profile drug haul case of Fatehgarh Sahib.
Special judge Kuldip Singh granted it the permission here on Wednesday. The two accused are in judicial custody in the high-security jail at Nabha in Patiala district. The case against Kahlon, which is about holding a huge quantity of heroin, was registered here on March 3.
On April 16, the police arrested Devinder Singh of Thermal Colony in Bathinda, on a charge of carrying a drug shipment for Kahlon. Niranjan Singh, assistant director in the enforcement directorate, Jalandhar zonal office, had moved an application before the court through special public prosecutor Manjinder Singh Chaudhary for permission to record the statements of Kahlon and Devinder Singh.
The application suggests that the statements are required under Section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering (PML) Act of 2002 and in the interest of justice. Investigating officer Niranajan Singh has pleaded that the accused are involved in money laundering and the ED wanted to trace all their connections.
The court ordered that Niranjan Singh would have the assistance of another person while recording the statements of Kahlon and Davinder Singh. The superintendent the Nabha jail has orders to provide the applicant with necessary help.
